The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of its Office of the Leader and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both previously held by Nnamdi Kanu.
The decision was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, June 18, by the Head of the Directorate of State (DOS), Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem.
According to the statement, the suspension was taken in the interest of the organisation’s security, stability, and long-term objectives, as well as to safeguard members of the movement globally, particularly those in the South-East region.
IPOB said the move also aims to prevent individuals or groups from falsely invoking the authority of the suspended offices to carry out activities not approved by the organisation.
The DOS stated that any criminal activity carried out in the name of the suspended offices should not be attributed to IPOB, but to those responsible.
It further clarified that the organisation would no longer take responsibility for actions of individuals or groups not authorised by its Directorate of State.
The decision, according to the statement, followed a full Directorate meeting held on June 17, 2026, where members agreed that the step was necessary in the collective interest of Biafrans.
IPOB also rejected any claim suggesting the dissolution of its Directorate of State, describing such assertions as “null and void.”
The group cited intelligence reports and internal concerns, including alleged communications linked to arrests and deaths of members, as well as fears of attempts to form a militia that could trigger renewed violence in the region.
Reaffirming its stance, IPOB stressed that its self-determination campaign remains peaceful and non-violent, warning that it must not endanger the people it claims to represent.
The Directorate added that the suspension of the Office of the Leader would remain in place pending further review.
