In the wake of an audacious arson attack on the Rivers State House of Assembly, suspected to be the work of political thugs, security forces have swiftly taken control of the facility, ensuring the safety of the premises and its surroundings.

The incident, which transpired on Sunday night, was characterized by a powerful explosion that rocked the legislative complex. The explosion inflicted damage to various properties within the assembly chamber and led to a massive fire outbreak. Sources indicate that the detonation occurred at approximately 9:30 pm when the suspected political thugs allegedly hurled an explosive device into the complex, causing chaos and extensive destruction.

This is coming amidst rumours of alleged moves by some lawmakers to impeach the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, over his clash with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

It was learned that arrangements had been concluded by some lawmakers to first impeach the Majority leader, Eddison Ehie, to pave the way for Fubara’s removal.

However, according to Leadership, more than 50 security operatives drawn from the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have taken over the Assembly Complex and the entire street of the legislative building.

The security operatives, however, advised motorists and other road users, on Monday morning, to use alternative routes to their destinations.

Also, about 17 security trucks and four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) were stationed at the entrance and surroundings of the assembly complex.
