An allegation by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, that the newly passed tax laws were altered after approval by the National Assembly has sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians.
Dasuki made the claim on Wednesday in a video that has since gone viral on X, alleging discrepancies between the tax bills passed by lawmakers and the versions later gazetted and made available to the public.
Raising the matter on the floor of the House, the lawmaker insisted that the changes were not clerical errors but serious alterations that breach the Nigerian Constitution.
“Mister Speaker, honorable colleagues, what was passed on this floor is not what is gazetted. I gave my vote, and it was counted, and I’m seeing something completely different,” Dasuki said.
“This is a breach of the Constitution and our laws, and this should not be taken by this honorable House.”
In response, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, assured lawmakers that the allegation would be investigated, pledging that the House would look into the matter.
The claim has since triggered strong reactions on social media, with many Nigerians describing the allegation as grave and potentially impeachable if proven.
Reacting on X, a user identified as OurFaveOnlineDoc alleged that the National Assembly had been undermined, describing the situation as “a total new low for this country.”
Human rights lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong, also weighed in, stating that the allegation, if established, amounts to an impeachable offense.
“This is an impeachable offense,” he wrote on Wednesday.
Another user, Obiasogu David, described the alleged development as constitutional fraud, saying, “If this is true, then the government has committed a constitutional fraud.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has not issued an official response to the allegation.
