British actor and activist Idris Elba has been knighted by King Charles III in recognition of his services to young people and community development.
The investiture ceremony took place at Windsor Castle on June 2, where the 53-year-old actor officially received the honour announced in the King’s 2026 New Year Honours List.
During the ceremony, King Charles performed the traditional knighthood ritual, tapping a sword on Elba’s shoulders as he knelt before the monarch.
The award recognises Elba’s longstanding commitment to youth empowerment, education, and community development initiatives.
The actor has been particularly active in campaigns aimed at tackling knife crime and supporting opportunities for young people. In 2022, he established the Elba Hope Foundation, which focuses on grassroots action, sustainable development, and community support programmes.
Elba’s connection to the Royal Family dates back to his teenage years when he received support from the then-Prince’s Trust, now known as the King’s Trust, enabling him to attend the National Youth Music Theatre at the age of 18.
The knighthood marks another milestone in the career of the award-winning actor, who is widely known for his roles in productions including Luther, Beasts of No Nation, and Thor.
King Charles, alongside Princess Anne and Prince William, regularly presides over investiture ceremonies that formally confer knighthoods, damehoods, and other national honours on recipients recognised for outstanding contributions to society.
