Veteran Nigerian Juju musician, Oluwashina Akanbi Peters, popularly known as Sir Shina Peters, has claimed that he has produced more evergreen songs than the late American pop legend, Michael Jackson.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, the 67-year-old music icon said that having timeless songs, often referred to as “classics,” is the ultimate legacy of any musician.
“The only thing you can show for showbiz at the end is how many evergreens you have produced. To my credit, I have four evergreens. Even Michael Jackson has just two — Of The World and Thriller,” he said. “So, if I have four, I am accomplished.”
Sir Shina Peters emphasized that every artist aspires to leave behind songs that remain relevant and cherished across generations, adding that his four evergreen hits make him proud of his contribution to music.
However, he expressed disappointment with the current state of the Nigerian music industry, lamenting that the standards set by him and his contemporaries have been eroded by the new generation of artists.
“Most of the standards we worked hard to build have been bastardised,” he said, noting that the quality and discipline that once defined Nigerian music have been compromised.
