Two visually impaired persons have been abducted by suspected kidnappers in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State while returning to Jos from Benue State.
The victims, a man and a woman, were among nine persons travelling to Benue for a training programme. However, the group reportedly received information while on the journey that the programme had been postponed and were asked to return to Jos.
Chairman of the Plateau State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Shindol Aaron, confirmed the incident, saying the abduction occurred at about 8pm on Monday. He disclosed that seven occupants of the vehicle escaped while the two victims were taken away.
Aaron said the incident had been reported to security agencies and that the driver also lodged a complaint at a police station. He added that although he had not personally spoken with the abductors, he was informed that they had contacted someone demanding ransom.
Another member of the association, Ishaya Ayuba Danjatau, disclosed that the kidnappers were demanding ₦50 million for the release of the victims.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of reporting.
