A Ghanaian woman, Mercy Yaaba Bredu, has died in China just two days after travelling from Ghana to begin her master’s degree programme.
Bredu reportedly left Ghana on Monday, August 24, 2026, to pursue further studies in China. However, her journey was cut short after she reportedly collapsed shortly after arriving at an airport in the country.
According to information shared by her former university classmates, Bredu suddenly became ill and was rushed to a hospital, where medical personnel attended to her and attempted to stabilise her condition.
She died on Wednesday, August 26, two days after leaving Ghana.
Reports from her colleagues indicate that Bredu had complained of heart pain during the flight from Ghana. Shortly after arriving in China, she reportedly collapsed while receiving a bouquet of flowers at the airport.
Her family had earlier seen her off at the Accra International Airport on Monday as she embarked on what was expected to be the beginning of a new academic journey.
Bredu was described as an accomplished student who graduated with first-class honours and had secured scholarships to pursue further studies in both the United States and China.
She reportedly chose China, where she planned to advance her education while also exploring opportunities in the import business.
Beyond her academic achievements, Bredu was actively involved in student leadership. She served as Vice President of the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in 2024.
News of her death has reportedly left her former classmates, friends and members of the ASSENS community in shock and mourning.
The circumstances surrounding her sudden death have not been officially disclosed.
