Galatasaray have confirmed that Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen suffered a groin injury during the club’s Turkish Super Lig clash with Istanbul Başakşehir.
The Nigerian forward picked up the injury during Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory over Başakşehir on Friday, September 4, 2026.
Osimhen opened the scoring for the Turkish champions but was forced off in the 33rd minute after experiencing discomfort in his right groin.
Following medical examinations at Acıbadem Hospital, Galatasaray confirmed that the 27-year-old sustained a moderate-to-advanced strain, with bleeding detected in the right adductor muscle group.
“Following the completion of MR and advanced examinations at our sponsor Acıbadem Hospital, advanced-moderate level strain (bleeding and strain) has been detected in the right adductor (groin) muscle group of our footballer Victor Osimhen,” the club said in a statement.
Galatasaray also revealed that midfielder Mario Lemina suffered a similar injury, with both players beginning treatment.
The club, however, did not disclose how long either player is expected to remain on the sidelines.
Osimhen’s injury has raised concerns over his availability for Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Madagascar on September 25 before travelling to Guinea-Bissau for their second Group L fixture four days later.
Nigeria’s preparations have already been affected by several injury concerns, with Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu and other key players also recently picking up knocks.
Osimhen has been in impressive form for Galatasaray this season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in four appearances.
The striker has also scored 35 goals for the Super Eagles and is currently just two goals behind Nigeria’s all-time leading scorer, the late Rashidi Yekini, who scored 37 times for the national team.
His potential absence would therefore be a major concern for Nigeria as the team begins its campaign to qualify for the 2027 AFCON.
