Fulani community leaders in Plateau State have disputed reports describing a man killed in the state as a “bandit”, saying the victim was allegedly mistaken for a criminal.
The leaders said the man, identified as Yusha’u, was reportedly shot while returning home from Nyola in Plateau State.
According to the community leaders, Yusha’u was allegedly mistaken for a bandit before he was killed.
The development has raised fresh concerns over the dangers of mistaken identity and the need for proper investigation before individuals are labelled as criminals in communities affected by insecurity.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in parts of Plateau State, where attacks, reprisals and disputes involving different communities have continued to generate competing accounts of events.
Fulani leaders have repeatedly called for investigations into attacks involving members of their community and cautioned against attributing criminal activities to an entire ethnic group.
