Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has criticised the inability of security agencies to locate bandits in their hideouts, questioning why criminal groups appear beyond reach while authorities are able to swiftly track ordinary citizens and social media influencers.

Speaking during an interview on TVC, Buratai reacted to growing public outrage over the continued activities of armed groups who reportedly flaunt ransom payments and criminal proceeds on social media without being apprehended.

He argued that the same intelligence and surveillance capabilities used in tracking civil offenders should also be deployed to locate and dismantle criminal networks operating in remote areas.

“I don’t think they fail to locate. If they can locate ordinary citizens or social media influencers, I don’t believe they cannot locate these bandits that flaunt their loots or their activities,” he said.

Buratai also called for improved capacity building within the nation’s security architecture, stressing that criminal groups are becoming more emboldened and adopting new methods of operation, including public displays of their activities online.

He urged security agencies to adapt to evolving threats and strengthen their operational effectiveness in tackling insecurity across the country.
