A Florida man, Sidney Holmes, has been awarded $1.7 million in compensation after spending 34 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit.

Holmes was just 23 years old when he was sentenced to 400 years in prison in 1988 for allegedly acting as the getaway driver in an armed robbery near Fort Lauderdale. He maintained his innocence from the start, insisting he was at home at the time.

“I thought I was going to die in prison,” Holmes told NBC 6, recalling his arrest and conviction based on what authorities now admit was vague and unreliable identification. The central detail linking him to the crime was a yellow car—a common vehicle color at the time.

During his incarceration, Holmes refused to let the injustice define him, earning a theology degree, a legal services qualification, and computer certifications. His case was eventually reviewed by Broward County State Attorney Harold Pryor’s Conviction Review Unit, which found no credible evidence tying him to the crime. He was released in 2023.

Florida law provides $50,000 for each year of wrongful imprisonment, but Holmes was initially denied compensation due to prior convictions. That changed earlier this year when lawmakers passed a claims bill allowing him to be paid, with Governor Ron DeSantis approving the $1.7 million settlement.

Now 59, Holmes says no amount of money can replace the time he lost, the memories stolen, or the loved ones he can never see again—especially his late father. “There’s never going to be enough money to make up for the time, the memories, and the people I lost,” he said.

Since regaining his freedom, Holmes has turned to advocacy work. He is writing a book and establishing a foundation to help others affected by wrongful convictions.
