The Mangun Old Students’ Association (MAOSA) has marked the 50th anniversary of the Government Science Secondary School, Mangun, commemorating five decades of educational excellence and societal contribution.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the President of MAOSA, Hon. Sunday Garba Biggs, expressed gratitude for the role the school has played in shaping the lives of generations of students. “The celebration of the Golden Jubilee gives us an opportunity to reflect with gratitude on what our Alma Mater has made us to be,” he said.
Since its founding as Mwaghavul Community Secondary School on November 27, 1975, the institution has undergone several transformations. It was taken over by the Plateau State Government in 1976 and renamed Government Secondary School. Later, it became a science-focused institution, Government Science Secondary School, and is now under the Federal Government as the Federal Government Science Technical College, Mangun.
Hon. Biggs highlighted the achievements of the alumni in various sectors, including media, law, politics, medicine, business, civil service, academia, and technology. He also acknowledged the contributions of past and present teaching and non-teaching staff in nurturing generations of students.
The old students have played a pivotal role in supporting the school, providing infrastructure such as computers, boreholes, hostels, and classroom furniture. Some alumni have also facilitated scholarships and sponsored tuition fees, meals, and other essentials for students.
Despite the celebration, Hon. Biggs noted that insecurity in surrounding communities prevented a formal convention. “Several communities have faced serious attacks in the last two years. While our hearts go out to families affected, we hope more can be done by security agencies and the government to stem the tide,” he said.
Hon. Biggs also paid tribute to former classmates who have passed away, commending their courage and strength. He concluded by reaffirming the enduring bond among alumni and their commitment to promoting the values and vision of the school.
The 50th anniversary stands as a testament to the institution’s legacy as a center of knowledge, innovation, and societal progress in Plateau State.
