The Federal Government has launched a new curriculum for Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) students, introducing compulsory digital literacy, coding, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies.
The announcement was made public by the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, who shared the full subject list on his X handle on Wednesday. According to him, the curriculum will take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session starting in September 2025.
“The new curriculum for Nigerian schools which will commence from the next session in September 2025 has been released,” Olusegun wrote, displaying a document said to contain the subjects.
Unveiled by the Federal Government on Sunday, the curriculum introduces digital literacy and basic entrepreneurship as compulsory at the JSS level, while programming, artificial intelligence, and international languages feature prominently at the SSS level.
Highlights of the New Curriculum:
- Junior Secondary (JSS 1–3):
Core areas include Mathematics, English Language, Integrated Science, Social Studies, and Languages, alongside new subjects such as Digital Literacy & Coding (Python basics, Scratch, robotics) and Entrepreneurship Basics. Creative Arts, Physical & Health Education, and environmental awareness also form part of the syllabus. - Senior Secondary (SS 1–3):
Students will study advanced Mathematics, English & Communication, Sciences, and Social Sciences. New additions include Programming (Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS), Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, Cybersecurity, and Digital Entrepreneurship. The curriculum also makes room for advanced language studies, creative media, leadership training, and compulsory Research & Project Work for final-year students.
The Federal Government says the overhaul is aimed at equipping Nigerian students with future-ready skills to compete globally while balancing traditional academic subjects with innovation and practical knowledge.
