The Federal Government has approved ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the approval during the commissioning of the remodelled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the airport on Wednesday.
Keyamo said the approval was granted by President Bola Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda as part of efforts to strengthen airport infrastructure and enhance the country’s aviation sector.
According to the minister, the runway project will improve operational efficiency and position the Kano airport to compete with other international airports.
“The President has approved the sum of ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,” he said.
Describing Kano as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria, Keyamo noted that the state occupies a strategic position in Nigeria’s economy and aviation industry.
The minister also disclosed that work has commenced on the upgrade of the airport’s Hajj Terminal, with contractors already mobilised to the site.
He explained that the remodelling of the Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal is part of the Federal Government’s broader aviation modernisation programme aimed at improving passenger comfort, operational efficiency, safety and service delivery across airports nationwide.
Keyamo added that the remodelled terminal was named after Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo in recognition of his contributions to the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
