The Federal High Court in Abuja has once again issued an order preventing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its planned National Convention, scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The convention was intended to elect new national officers to lead the party’s affairs. However, a former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, through an ex-parte application filed by his counsel, Jephthah Njikonye, SAN, sought an interim injunction to halt the event pending the hearing and determination of a substantive motion.
In a ruling delivered on November 11, Justice Peter Lifu held that Lamido’s application had merit and warranted court intervention. The judge consequently restrained the PDP from holding the convention until the substantive suit is resolved.
The court also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring or recognising the convention pending the resolution of the case.
Justice Lifu noted that Lamido, a bona fide member of the PDP with interest in the national chairman position, would suffer greater hardship if the interim order were not granted. He added that there was no reason to depart from an earlier decision by Justice James Omotosho of the same court, delivered on October 31, 2025, which similarly stopped the PDP’s national convention and restrained INEC from involvement.
