E-Transmission: If India Can Do It, Nigeria Can — Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called for the adoption of electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria, arguing that the country has no justification for delays when larger democracies have successfully embraced the system.

In a statement shared on his verified X account on Tuesday, Obi pointed to India as a practical example. He noted that the world’s largest democracy manages elections involving nearly one billion registered voters, over one million polling units, and thousands of political parties, yet still utilises technology to transmit results within days.

Obi contrasted this with Nigeria’s electoral scale, observing that the country has about 93 million registered voters — roughly one-seventh of India’s population — alongside far fewer polling units and political parties. He said it was troubling that Nigeria still struggles to conduct elections efficiently and transmit results promptly, despite recording voter turnout below 20 percent in many instances.

The former Anambra governor attributed the gap largely to governance and institutional commitment, stressing that nations that prioritise citizens’ welfare and long-term development tend to build stronger electoral systems.

He urged Nigerians to demand leadership driven by integrity, public interest, and forward planning, noting that credible elections remain central to national progress and democratic stability.
