On Tuesday, several members of the House of Representatives staged a walkout in protest against attempts to reverse the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2025.

The unrest followed an executive session called by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, which failed to resolve the dispute as the chamber returned to a rowdy plenary.

The controversy began when Francis Waive, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, moved a motion seeking to rescind the bill, originally passed in December 2025. During a voice vote, the “nays” were louder than the “ayes,” but the Speaker ruled in favour of the ayes, sparking immediate protests.

After the executive session, members stood and blocked Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu from continuing proceedings. Eventually, aggrieved lawmakers walked out, continuing their protest specifically over Clause 60(3), which mandates the compulsory electronic transmission of election results.

Further updates on the standoff are expected as the situation develops.
