Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have returned a ₦100,000 cash gift sent to them by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing the transfer as unsolicited and unapproved.
The lawmakers said the money was paid into their personal bank accounts on the governor’s instruction.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on December 30, 2025, and signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Enemi Aabo George.
According to the statement, members of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly received bank alerts of ₦100,000 each on Monday. The House said the funds were transferred without its knowledge or approval.
“Upon discovery of these unsolicited and unapproved transfers, Honourable members of the House took immediate steps to formally return the said funds to the account of the Rivers State Government,” the statement read.
The lawmakers stressed that as a constitutionally established institution, all public spending must follow due process, including legislative approval.
They further accused the governor of repeatedly drawing funds from the state’s Consolidated Revenue Account without the consent of the House, despite warnings, Supreme Court judgements and constitutional provisions on separation of powers.
The development comes amid renewed political tensions in Rivers State, particularly the ongoing rift between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
