Legendary musician and entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs has officially begun serving his federal prison sentence at FCI Fort Dix, a low-security correctional facility in New Jersey.
According to law enforcement sources, Diddy was transferred early Thursday morning and began the check-in process shortly after his arrival. His transfer follows Judge Arun Subramanian’s sentencing of the music mogul to 50 months in prison, with the Federal Bureau of Prisons approving his request to serve his term at Fort Dix.
The rapper’s legal team explained that the facility was selected to allow him access to drug rehabilitation programs, maximize family visitation, and support his personal recovery efforts while in custody.
Before his transfer, Diddy had been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn since September 2024, after his arrest and denial of bail. MDC has long been criticized for overcrowding and poor conditions, which his lawyers described as “harsh and unsafe.”
While Fort Dix offers a less restrictive environment, Diddy’s attorney Mark Geragos warned that the star could still face serious risks behind bars. Speaking on the 2 Angry Men podcast, Geragos said his client “has a target on his back,” noting that threats of sexual and violent assaults remain a concern.
Those fears echo earlier claims made during his sentencing hearing, where Diddy’s team revealed that he once woke up to find a knife pressed against his neck by another inmate.
Now settling into his new environment, Diddy’s projected release date is May 8, 2028, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. However, that could change depending on his conduct, rehabilitation progress, and participation in correctional programs.
