The management of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has suspended a 200-level Biotechnology student, Ezi Ugoma, for uploading a video on TikTok showing a dying student allegedly linked to an abortion case.
According to a letter dated October 21, 2025, and signed by the Principal Assistant Registrar (Students), Ughwumiakpor A., on behalf of the Deputy Registrar (Students), the university found Ugoma guilty of breaching her matriculation oath by inappropriately filming and sharing the sensitive scene at the University Health Centre.
The disciplinary action, approved by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel O. Asagba, stated that Ugoma was rusticated for four semesters — effective from the 2025/2026 academic session — and would be allowed to resume in the 2027/2028 session.
The letter read in part:
“You appeared before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC) held on August 21, 22, and 25, 2025, to defend yourself against the allegation of gross misconduct — breach of matriculation oath arising from inappropriate filming with a mobile handset of the scene of a dying student at the University Health Centre and uploading it on TikTok.
“After due consideration of the Committee’s report, the Vice Chancellor has approved the recommendation that you be rusticated for four semesters, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session. You are to resume studies in the 2027/2028 academic session.”
The university described the act as “gross misconduct and a violation of the institution’s code of conduct.” Copies of the disciplinary letter were also forwarded to her sponsors and other relevant authorities.
Following the development, reports indicate that Ugoma’s stepfather reacted angrily to the suspension, reportedly telling her to abandon her education and prepare to return to the village.
Meanwhile, broadcast journalist and Arise TV anchor, Oseni Rufai, has condemned the university’s decision, describing it as a “gross injustice.” In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Rufai appealed to the Vice Chancellor to intervene and reconsider the punishment.
He wrote:
“I’m writing to you this morning regarding an unjustifiable two-year suspension given to a 200-level Biotechnology student of Delta State University, Abraka, over a video she uploaded on TikTok — warning girls against abortions as stated in her caption.
Please sir, do not allow this injustice to stand, as this young lady’s future is about to be shattered and cut short.”
Rufai further revealed that Ugoma’s stepfather had already disowned her, urging the university not to “allow this young lady’s future to be ruined over one mistake.”
