The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the remand of a 32-year-old man, Arinze Nwogba, at the Kuje Correctional Centre over allegations that he impersonated the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Segun Aina.
Nwogba was arraigned before Justice Salim Ibrahim on a six-count charge filed by the police. He was accused of using Prof. Aina’s name and photograph on WhatsApp and Truecaller while allegedly attempting to gain financial advantage.
The prosecution alleged that Nwogba used a telephone number to pose as the JAMB registrar and that he acted in concert with other persons who are still at large. The alleged offences are said to contravene provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Following his plea, his lawyer, Christian Ejike, informed the court that a bail application had already been filed. The prosecution opposed the application, arguing that the defendant might evade justice if released.
Justice Ibrahim subsequently ordered that Nwogba be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the court’s ruling on his bail application. The court fixed October 7 for the ruling and adjourned the case until October 19 for commencement of trial.
