The prices of cooking gas and diesel have recorded fresh increases across parts of Nigeria, adding to the pressure on households and businesses already grappling with rising living costs.
The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, has climbed to about ₦1,500 per kilogramme, up from around ₦1,200/kg previously, representing an increase of approximately 25 per cent.
In some parts of Lagos, however, consumers are reportedly paying as much as ₦1,600 per kilogramme, while retail prices in other South-West states vary depending on location, transportation and distribution costs.
The increase has also been reflected in the diesel market, with the price of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly called diesel, rising to as high as ₦2,300 per litre at some filling stations and depots.
Recent depot price data showed increases across several locations. In Lagos, for instance, some depots recorded significant price adjustments, with Ibachem’s diesel price rising from ₦1,830 to ₦2,000 per litre, while other major suppliers also recorded increases.
The rising cost of diesel is particularly significant for businesses that depend on generators and other diesel-powered equipment, while higher cooking gas prices are putting additional pressure on households and food businesses.
Industry operators have linked the increases to higher energy and logistics costs, as well as disruptions in global oil and gas markets. Transportation and distribution expenses also continue to influence the final prices paid by consumers.
The latest development comes at a time when Nigerian households are already facing higher costs for food, transportation and other essential goods and services.
With LPG and diesel both becoming more expensive, consumers and businesses may face further increases in their operating and household expenses if the upward price trend continues.
