COAS Flags Off Nigerian Army’s RSM Convention in Jos, Calls for Exemplary Leadership

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General OO Oluyede, has reaffirmed the critical role of Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) in the Nigerian Army, stating that their leadership and discipline are vital to operational success. Represented by Major General Hilary Nzan, Commander of the 4th Special Forces Command, Doma Barracks, the COAS made these remarks while declaring open the Nigerian Army’s First Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention 2025, held in Jos, hosted by the Headquarters of 3 Division in, Plateau State.

In his keynote address, the COAS emphasized the importance of the RSM cadre as the vital link between officers and soldiers, describing them as custodians of barracks culture and standard-bearers of discipline. “Your leadership has a direct impact on our operational success,” he said, noting that the theme of the convention—“Culturing Exemplary Professional Leadership for Improved Motivation and Operational Efficiency in the Nigerian Army”—was both timely and appropriate.

Highlighting the evolving nature of Nigeria’s security challenges, the COAS noted that competent leadership and accountability at all levels of the Army have become increasingly important. He expressed optimism that the convention would deepen leadership competencies, foster cross-learning, and renew commitment to regimental values across formations.

The Army Chief also acknowledged the complex responsibilities RSMs carry, particularly in upholding the cherished traditions, customs, and ethics of the Nigerian Army amid growing internal security and counter-terrorism operations. “This conference will not only examine these challenges but also explore innovative ways to tackle them,” he added.

Lieutenant General Oluyede expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support to the Armed Forces and thanked the Plateau State Government for its continued cooperation with Army formations. He also commended the Chief of Administration (Army), the Organizing Committee, and the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division for their contributions to the successful hosting of the event.

Earlier in his welcome address, Chief of Administration (Army), Major General LA Fejokwu, described the convention as a “historic milestone,” stating that it offers a platform for RSMs to draw lessons, share experiences, and enhance regimentation across units. “Over the next few days, we will engage in thought-provoking discussions and explore solutions to challenges facing our units,” he said.

General Fejokwu extended gratitude to the COAS for his leadership and support in enabling the convention and urged all participants to engage actively, share insights, and learn from one another in pursuit of excellence.

Also speaking at the event, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Major General Folunsho Oyinlola, welcomed delegates to the city of Jos and expressed pride in hosting the inaugural edition of the convention. He described the gathering as “a call to action” and lauded the RSMs as the backbone of discipline and leadership within the Army.

“Your ability to mentor, inspire, and uphold the highest standards directly influences our operational outcomes,” he said. General Oyinlola also acknowledged the COAS for his transformative leadership and the Chief of Administration for the meticulous planning that ensured the success of the convention.

The Nigerian Army’s inaugural RSM Convention, which runs from May 26 to 31, 2025, held at Crispan Hotel Hall in Jos, aims to strengthen leadership, professionalism, and morale among senior non-commissioned officers across formations nationwide.
