The Borno State Government has temporarily shut down and relocated Government Day Secondary School, Mussa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area following the abduction of 42 students by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.
The decision was announced by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, during an official visit to the affected community on Monday.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson to Governor Babagana Zulum, Dauda Illiya, the relocation is part of measures under the Safe Schools Initiative aimed at protecting students while ensuring the continuity of learning.
The affected students are expected to resume academic activities at Government Secondary School, Uba.
During the visit, the commissioner held meetings with community leaders, parents of the abducted students, and military officials, including the Commanding Officer of the 115 Battalion in Askira, Lt. Col. Ishola Olufisola.
He assured residents that the state government was intensifying efforts to secure the safe release of the abducted students and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding schools across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the affected parents, Ishaku Jidaye commended Governor Zulum for his swift response to the incident and called for more aggressive rescue operations.
The delegation also visited Dille and Lassa communities to assess the security situation in nearby schools and directed full enforcement of Safe School Initiative measures in all affected institutions.
The students were reportedly abducted on May 16 after suspected insurgents attacked Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira/Uba LGA.
