Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Saina Buba, has come under criticism after threatening political opponents with physical harm if they refuse to support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Buba made the remarks during a campaign inauguration organised by the Tinubu City Boy Movement, a political support group backing President Bola Tinubu’s administration and his anticipated bid for a second term in 2027.
Addressing supporters at the event, the commissioner warned those who oppose the APC, using language that appeared to threaten physical violence.
“Whoever shows us a finger, we are ready to cut off his fingers.
“We are now playing politics. Whoever shows us a finger, we will show him a finger… Whoever dares to show us a finger again, we will break his finger,” Buba said.
The commissioner also appeared to suggest that access to government benefits could depend on political allegiance.
“The government is our government. Those who follow us will enjoy the honey; if you refuse, then you will be flogged,” he stated.
The comments have sparked outrage, with concerns raised over the use of threatening language by a serving government official during a political mobilisation event.
The remarks come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various support groups mobilising across the country in support of President Tinubu’s administration.
Buba’s comments have also renewed concerns about the tone of political campaigns and the need for political actors to promote peaceful participation and respect for voters’ freedom to support candidates and parties of their choice.
