FC Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement with Newcastle United F.C. to sign England winger Anthony Gordon in a deal valued at £69.3 million (€80 million), including add-ons.
The 25-year-old is expected to travel to Spain on Thursday for his medical examination before completing the high-profile transfer ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The move comes despite interest from FC Bayern Munich, who had previously been linked with the Newcastle forward. However, the Bundesliga champions are reportedly no longer planning to make a rival offer for Gordon despite earlier interest in adding him to an attacking line-up that already includes Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz.
Gordon enjoyed an impressive campaign with Newcastle, finishing the season as the club’s top scorer with 18 goals across competitions.
Notably, the winger was left unused in Newcastle’s final four matches of the season, a decision believed to have been aimed at preserving his fitness ahead of the expected transfer.
The England international had only signed a long-term contract extension at St James’ Park in October 2024, with four years still remaining on his deal.
Earlier this year, Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson acknowledged that the club could be forced to sell key players to support its summer transfer plans and financial strategy.
Gordon’s imminent arrival at Barcelona has also cast uncertainty over the future of Marcus Rashford, who spent the season on loan at the Catalan club from Manchester United F.C..
Rashford is reportedly keen on remaining at Barcelona permanently and is said to be willing to accept a pay cut to make the move possible.
However, Manchester United are understood to be unwilling to sanction another loan arrangement and reportedly value the forward at around £26 million.
With Gordon expected to strengthen Barcelona’s attacking options, Rashford may now view the World Cup as a crucial opportunity to convince coach Hansi Flick and the club’s hierarchy that he deserves a long-term place at the Nou Camp.
