Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has said a joint presidential ticket between Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso would have a better chance of winning the 2027 presidential election than if both politicians contested separately.
Lawal made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV, where he shared his views on the prospects of key political figures ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to the former SGF, an alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso would present a formidable challenge to other contenders and significantly improve the opposition’s chances of victory.
He estimated that such a joint ticket would have about a 70 per cent chance of winning the presidential election.
Lawal said he believes Peter Obi would strive to govern fairly and make decisions in the interest of all Nigerians, adding that pairing him with Kwankwaso would create a stronger electoral platform than either candidate running independently.
He argued that if Obi and Kwankwaso contested separately, their chances of success would be greatly diminished.
The former SGF also offered his assessment of other potential contenders, saying President Bola Tinubu would have about a 50 per cent chance of winning re-election, while former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar stood no realistic chance of emerging victorious.
Lawal further stated that he expects Atiku to lose if he contests the 2027 presidential election, expressing confidence that the former vice-president would not secure enough support to win.
His comments come as political discussions and realignments continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, with several political stakeholders speculating about possible alliances among opposition figures.
