Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has put on hold his planned registration as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following growing speculation that former President Goodluck Jonathan may be considering a 2027 presidential bid under the party’s platform.

Atiku, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after prolonged internal disputes, was expected to formally join the ADC by collecting his membership card at a ceremony in his hometown of Jada, Adamawa State. The event, scheduled for Wednesday, August 6, was to be conducted by ADC officials.

However, Sunday PUNCH reports that the ceremony has been postponed indefinitely, with no official explanation from Atiku’s camp.

A chieftain of the party confirmed that the ADC has been engaged in discreet talks with Jonathan over a potential 2027 run.

ADC’s Adamawa State chairman, Shehu Yohana, told Sunday PUNCH that Atiku informed him of the postponement during a phone conversation on Friday.

“I spoke with the former vice president, and he told me he has shifted the event to mid-August, but no specific date was mentioned. From the way things are going, due to one issue or the other, the event may get to September,” Yohana said.

According to him, Atiku indicated he was waiting for some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors planning to defect to the ADC before holding his reception in Jada.
