The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) branch, has suspended its strike after the university’s lecturers received their full August 2026 salaries.
The union had commenced an indefinite withdrawal of academic and administrative services on September 7 over the non-payment of the complete August salary to its members.
In a statement issued on Friday, September 11, the ASUU-UNIZIK branch said the outstanding salaries had now been fully paid, prompting its congress to resolve to suspend the industrial action with immediate effect.
The union directed all members to resume their academic and administrative responsibilities, including teaching, lectures, supervision, marking, committee meetings and submission of results.
The strike followed a resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council empowering branches to withdraw their services when members’ salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.
When the strike began, the UNIZIK branch urged the university management and President Bola Tinubu, who is the university’s Visitor, to intervene and ensure the complete payment of the August salaries.
The union also expressed concern over the recurrence of delayed or incomplete salary payments and called for measures to prevent similar situations in the future.
With the payment now completed, academic and administrative activities at Nnamdi Azikiwe University are expected to continue as lecturers return to their duties.
