Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have arrested five suspects following the death of a teenage girl caused by a stray bullet during a wedding celebration in Borno State.

According to a statement by the Joint Task Force in the North-East, the incident occurred on April 4 at about 2:00 p.m. within the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Teachers Staff Quarters in Maiduguri.

The victim, a 14-year-old girl, was reportedly struck by a stray bullet fired during sporadic gunshots at the event.

Authorities said the gunfire was carried out by individuals later identified as members of a vigilante group attached to a local government chairman’s escort team.

Following the incident, troops, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), launched an operation and tracked down the suspects in the Ngomari area, where they were arrested.

The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

The military condemned the reckless use of firearms at social events, warning that such actions endanger lives and will not be tolerated.
