Nigerian singer and songwriter Simi (Simisola Kosoko) has responded to renewed criticism over some of her old social media posts, stating that the remarks were taken out of context and were never linked to any wrongdoing.

The reaction followed fresh online discussions after the artiste spoke out against sexual violence during conversations sparked by a trending case on TikTok. Her comments condemning rape and calling for stronger consequences for offenders triggered mixed reactions online.

In a statement shared on Sunday via her account on X, the singer said she was alerted to screenshots of tweets she made more than a decade ago and felt compelled to clarify their context.

According to Simi, the posts dated back to around 2012, when she was still living with her mother, assisting at her daycare centre, and trying to build her music career. She explained that at the time she frequently shared everyday experiences online, including light-hearted observations about children at the daycare.

She stressed that the tweets reflected casual moments and affection toward children, not inappropriate intent, insisting that nothing she posted was driven by perversion or misconduct.

The singer also disclosed that some of the old posts had been removed due to the sensitivity of the situation and its impact on her family, even though she initially preferred not to delete them.

Reaffirming her stance, Simi said her recent comments condemning sexual violence were consistent with her long-standing views, noting that she has always spoken against abuse and exploitation.

The development continues to stir debate across social media, with users divided over the interpretation of the resurfaced posts and her explanation.
