Amusan Claims Fifth Straight National 100m Hurdles Title at AFN Trials in Lagos

World record holder Tobi Amusan extended her dominance in the 100m hurdles by clinching her fifth consecutive national title at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials, held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

The 28-year-old sprint sensation stormed out of the blocks and crossed the finish line in an impressive 12.57 seconds, further solidifying her position as Nigeria’s top hurdler ahead of the World Athletics Championships scheduled for September in Tokyo.

Rising star Adaobi Tabugbo finished second with 13.03s, while Faith Osamuyi took third place in 13.36s.

Other Highlights from the National Trials:

  • Men’s 400m Final
    Gafar Badmus emerged national champion with a time of 45.71s, ahead of Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29s) and David Akhalu (46.91s).
  • Women’s 400m Final
    In a dramatic turn, veteran Patience Okon-George was disqualified, paving the way for African U-20 champion Favour Onyah to seize victory in 52.69s. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna placed second and third, respectively.
  • Women’s 100m Final
    U-20 African champion Chioma Nweke claimed her first senior national title in 11.27s, dethroning defending champion Olayinka Olajide, who finished second in 11.39s. Iyanuoluwa Bada rounded out the top three with 11.45s.

Amusan’s continued dominance and the rise of young talents like Nweke and Onyah signal a promising outlook for Nigeria’s athletics contingent heading into the global stage later this year.
