A human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishi, has accused officers of the Delta State Police Command’s C Division of orchestrating extortion schemes involving Point-of-Sale (POS) operators.
Gwamnishi made the allegation in a video shared online, where he claimed that the officers keep a “resident” POS operator within the station to facilitate the collection of money from victims.
According to him, the incident involved a man identified as Ugochukwu, who was reportedly arrested by police officers while on his way to the airport. He alleged that the victim was detained for several hours before being released only after paying a sum of ₦50,000.
The video captured the moment a female POS operator was invited into the station. Gwamnishi claimed that the victim transferred ₦51,500 to the operator before regaining his freedom.
He further stated that the ordeal caused the victim to miss his scheduled international flight, forcing him to incur additional expenses for a new ticket and hotel accommodation.
Reacting to the allegations, the Nigeria Police Force Complaint Response Unit confirmed via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle that the officers involved have been arrested and detained.
The unit added that the officers are expected to appear before the Delta State Commissioner of Police on April 16 for further disciplinary action.
A video of the incident shared by Gwamnishi has since circulated widely on social media, drawing public attention to concerns over police misconduct and extortion.
