The Plateau State Youth Council has taken a proactive step towards fostering a harmonious relationship between the University of Jos community and the state’s vibrant youth population. In a significant move aimed at promoting collaboration and addressing key student concerns, the leadership of the Plateau State Youth Council embarked on a courtesy visit to the University of Jos on Friday, May 10, 2024.
Led by Chairman Comrade Emmanuel Jukun, alongside the PRO of the Council, Comrade Walshak Kumenr, and other executive members, the delegation was warmly received by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Tanko Ishaya, and other members of the management team. The meeting took place at the Registrar’s Conference Hall, Naraguta Campus.
During the visit, Comrade Emmanuel Jukun underscored the importance of forging a strong partnership between the Plateau State Youth Council and the University of Jos community. He emphasized the council’s commitment to supporting the welfare and interests of students within the university.
“As a leadership, we are deeply invested in the well-being of the University of Jos and its students. It is our duty to engage with the university community, seek partnerships, and address pertinent issues affecting students,” stated Comrade Emmanuel Jukun.
Furthermore, the council expressed appreciation for the efforts of the university management in upholding academic standards and nurturing a conducive learning environment. However, they also raised concerns regarding the recent ultimatum issued to students who have been unable to pay their school fees, highlighting the potential impact on their academic progress.
In his remarks, Comrade Emmanuel Jukun appealed to the university management to show compassion towards students facing financial difficulties and consider extending the deadline for fee payment. He stressed the importance of supporting students during challenging times, especially amidst the economic uncertainties faced by many families.
In response, Vice Chancellor Prof Tanko Ishaya expressed gratitude for the visit and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the welfare of its students. He acknowledged the challenges faced by students in meeting their financial obligations and assured the council of ongoing efforts to alleviate their burden.
“We are aware of the difficulties faced by students, and we are actively seeking support from state governments and philanthropists to assist students in need,” stated Prof Tanko Ishaya.
Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor highlighted initiatives such as scholarships and work schemes aimed at supporting students and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the university and external stakeholders in addressing student welfare concerns.
As discussions concluded, both parties expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration and reiterated their commitment to working together towards the betterment of the University of Jos community and its students.
