Renowned cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, received a six-month jail sentence without the option of a fine today, April 12, from Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The verdict comes after Bobrisky was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on April 5, facing a six-count charge that included allegations of Abuse of the Naira and Money Laundering. While the money laundering charges were dismissed by the court, Bobrisky admitted to the offense of Naira Abuse, leading to his conviction.
Initially remanded in EFCC detention in Lagos, Bobrisky awaited the hearing for his judgement, initially scheduled for April 9. However, due to the Eid-Fitri public holiday from April 9 to April 11, the court’s session was postponed.
During the proceedings, Bobrisky affirmed his gender identity as male when questioned by the court.
In her ruling, Justice Abimbola Awogboro emphasized the gravity of abusing the Nigerian Currency and asserted that sentencing Bobrisky to prison would serve as a deterrent to others engaging in similar offenses.
Consequently, Bobrisky was ordered to serve his six-month jail term at the Ikoyi Correctional Center.
