In a landmark judgment, the High Court of Plateau State has ruled in favor of Zakari Hamani, ordering a payment of N40 million in damages against Brigadier General Onilenla, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Chief of Defence Staff for assault.
The case stemmed from an incident where Zakari Hamani was assaulted by Brigadier General Onilenla while going about his normal business. Dissatisfied with the conduct of the military officer, Hamani petitioned through his counsel, Gyang Zi esq, to the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Staff.
However, the response from the military officials justified the conduct of Brigadier General Onilenla, prompting Hamani to take legal action. Represented by Gyang Zi & Co., Hamani filed a case challenging the conduct of the respondents.
In a judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Mary A. Izam of the High Court of Plateau State, the court condemned the actions of the respondents and awarded N40 million in favor of Hamani as compensation for the violation of his fundamental human rights.
The ruling serves as a significant victory in the fight against human rights violations and sends a strong message of accountability to those in positions of authority. Hamani’s legal team hailed the decision as a triumph for justice and a step forward in upholding the rights of every citizen.
