In a remarkable display of community engagement and a commitment to healthy living, thousands of residents gathered today in Jos, Plateau State, for the annual De Amazone Road Waka, organized by sports enthusiast Jennifer Okoye. Dubbed “A Walk into Good Health,” the event drew participants from all walks of life, ranging from young fitness enthusiasts to seasoned veterans, all eager to partake in the 10km road walk.
The lively atmosphere was palpable as participants embarked on the scenic route, starting from the Jay FM/Plateau Polytechnic junction and winding their way to the PRTV Roundabout in Rayfield before returning to the starting point. The event saw enthusiastic participation from various organizations and agencies, with individuals of all ages joining in the exercise.
Jennifer Okoye, the visionary behind the Jenifer Okoye Sports Vibe, expressed her excitement at the overwhelming turnout, noting that her passion for fitness inspired her to organize the event. Building on the success of the inaugural edition in 2022, Okoye emphasized the importance of promoting overall health and well-being through regular exercise.
“With the impressive turnout we’ve seen today, including participants of all ages, we are truly achieving the objectives of De Amazone Road Waka,” Okoye remarked. “I hope to see even more people join us in the future, and with increased sponsorship, we can make this a regular occurrence to promote health consciousness.”
Among the participants was Mrs. Ayuku Pwaspo, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Plateau State chapter, who described the walk as both invigorating and symbolic of peace. Former CMD of JUTH and Chairman of the Sports Committee at the University of Jos, Dr. Ishaya Pam, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the enjoyable nature of the exercise and advocating for its more frequent organization.
Superintendent Peter Longsang, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Plateau State, underscored the importance of regular physical activity in maintaining good health. He encouraged citizens to embrace walking and other forms of exercise, emphasizing the environmental benefits of reducing carbon monoxide emissions by opting for non-motorized transportation.
Sammy Adesoji, a Board member of the Plateau Football Association and journalist, lauded the efforts of the organizers and called for increased support to ensure the continuity of the exercise.
The annual De Amazon Road Waka serves as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in promoting health and wellness, fostering camaraderie, and inspiring individuals to lead active lifestyles.
