In an effort to bolster democratic processes within the Labour Party, the Coalition for Peter Obi (CPO) has penned an open letter to Comr. Julius Abure Esq., the National Chairman of the Labour Party, advocating for inclusive congresses and transparent electoral procedures.
The CPO, a staunch supporter of the Labour Party and the Obidient movement, expressed its unwavering commitment to rebuilding Nigeria alongside Peter Obi and Datti Ahmed. Following an online meeting held on March 21, 2024, the CPO presented a series of recommendations aimed at fostering inclusivity and grassroots engagement within the party.
Central to their appeal is the call for the National Working Committee to ensure the unimpeded inclusion of all willing and committed members in the upcoming congresses. The CPO proposes a strategic approach, commencing the congresses from the grassroots level, progressing through wards, Local Government Areas (LGAs), and culminating at the state level. This, they argue, will empower members to actively participate in the selection of representatives for the National Convention, fostering a collective decision-making process.
Furthermore, the CPO recommends the establishment of Screening and Electoral Committees with clear mandates, whose details should be made public. They stress that transparency and accountability are indispensable for the credibility of the electoral process.
The coalition underscores the importance of democratic values and transparency, advocating for a platform where every member can voice their opinions and contribute to shaping the party’s future. They believe that inclusivity and grassroots engagement are paramount for the party’s strength and progress towards shared goals.
In closing, the CPO expresses gratitude to the National Chairman for considering their recommendations, which they believe will greatly benefit the Labour Party. They eagerly anticipate positive reforms that will strengthen the party’s internal democracy and advance its goals.
The letter was co-signed by prominent members of the Coalition for Peter Obi, including Barr Joshua Ebighiabi, National Coordinator of CPO, Pamson Dagyat, Chairman of CPO LP Convention Liaison, and Rev. Haruna Maidoki of the Initiative for Better and Brighter Nigeria (IBBN), among others.
The CPO’s appeal represents a significant push for inclusivity and transparency within the Labour Party, reflecting a broader commitment to democratic ideals and effective governance in Nigeria.
