In defiance of the 24-hour curfew mandated by Governor Celeb Mutfwang in Mangu town, reports reveal that violence continues to plague the area, with ongoing killings and house burnings persisting.
A grim incident unfolded as a family of five, including a mother, father, and three children, fell victim to the conflict, being set ablaze amidst the turmoil. Shockingly, a mosque and a church were also burnt down in Mangu Local Government Area despite the imposed curfew.
The unrest leading to the curfew erupted after a reported conflict between a motorcyclist and a Fulani herder on Tuesday, January 23. The tension escalated as security situations worsened following the initial incident.
Plateau state is witnessing an alarming surge in killings and attacks within local communities, with fresh assaults occurring less than 24 hours after the state government declared the curfew in Mangu local government.
Residents report that armed assailants have invaded multiple communities, firing indiscriminately at people and leaving houses in ashes.
Responding to the escalating security crisis, Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, announced an immediate 24-hour curfew in Mangu Local Government Area. The decision, made after consultations with relevant security agencies, restricts movement within the area to individuals engaged in essential duties only.
Governor Mutfwang urged all citizens, especially Mangu residents, to comply with the curfew and collaborate with security forces by providing credible information to restore peace and order.
Expressing concern, Governor Mutfwang lamented the determination of certain individuals to perpetuate insecurity in the state, despite the government’s efforts to quell the activities of terrorist elements.
Offering condolences to the victims and their families, Governor Mutfwang affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to achieving lasting peace in the state. He assured the public that the curfew would be subject to review as soon as the security situation witnesses improvement.
