In a recent press briefing on Friday, Professor Bernard Matur, the Vice Chancellor of Plateau State University, Bokkos, affirmed the university’s commitment to constructive dialogue and collaboration with its academic workforce. The focus is on fostering a conducive working environment to support the institution’s growth.
Addressing the concerns raised by academic workers who initiated an indefinite strike the previous day over outstanding allowances, Professor Matur assured that ongoing negotiations, initiated prior to the strike, would be diligently pursued until all issues are amicably resolved within a week.
In the statement which was signed by the PRO, John Agams, he highlighted several achievements within his five-month tenure, including the expansion of faculties from four to ten, addressing salary arrears, clearing academic allowances, settling promotion allowances, and substantial infrastructural improvements.
Security enhancements were also emphasized, with the establishment of a police station, a military task force, and recruitment of additional security personnel, both private and volunteer. The Vice Chancellor stressed collaborative efforts with law enforcement to ensure maximum security on campus.
Reflecting on the university’s history since its establishment in 2005, Professor Matur shared insights into his assumption of the role as the 5th Vice Chancellor in March 2023. He outlined the initiation of new programs and recent approvals from the National Universities Commission, strategically designed to meet admission requirements and address the evolving environment.
Acknowledging the support of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Professor Matur noted the administration’s commitment to providing resources for accreditation, addressing salary arrears, and clearing academic allowances. The Vice Chancellor urged students to continue academic activities, expressing optimism for a swift resolution of the striking lecturers’ concerns within a week.
