After graduating from high school in 1998, Makut Alfred Mashat a.k.a Seemo Da Black Czar had one dream: to make it big in the emerging Jos, Plateau State hip hop scene popularly called J-TOWN.
Seemo Da Black CZAR had been writing rhymes and rapping on the streets and hoods of Jos since 1996, with his first hip-hop group, KroniK Trybe. later it metamorphosed into Ex-Members that released an album, but it didn’t get much attention.
Seemo’s biggest inspiration then was Eldee Xtra-Large, who hosted a popular hip-hop show on Power 90.5 FM. Black Czar was so impressed with his skills that he tracked Eldee down to his house in Bukuru Low Cost. There, he met the legendary producer Mr. Baron of Ill-Conspiracy, who had worked on the soundtrack for the film “Out of Bounds” by Richard Mofe Damijo(RmD) with Black Maskuradaz and Aisha.
Mr. Baron and Eldee became Seemo’s hip-hop guides, and they helped him to hone his skills as a writer and performer.
In 1999, SEEMO moved to Lagos to pursue his dream of becoming a professional rapper. He quickly made a name for himself in the streets, battling anyone who would challenge him in the Gowon Estate projects and other hoods in Lagos. His reputation grew, and he soon became a member of the Afro-hip-hop movement in Nigeria, led by Seyi Allen.
His big break came in Festac Town when DJ Jimmy Jatt gave him an instrumental to freestyle on at a star-studded event. He was introduced by Eldee Xtra-Large of Rythm 93.7 FM Lagos as a rapper from Jos, and the crowd went wild after just four lines into his performance. That was the moment Seemo Da Black Czar was born.
Seemo signed a promotional deal with Cypha Records, then Real Records, and All Black Entertainment.
He released several street anthems and performed on major stages all over Lagos including performing to over 50,000 fans at the annual Kennis Music Easter Fiesta in Kuramo Beach.
In 2006, Seemo signed a 4 million Naira contract with African Reply and released his debut studio album, “Bibini Kalahari: The Voice of the Motherland.”
The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish him as one of the leading lights of the Nigerian hip-hop scene. He followed it up with the album “Industreetz Reloaded 007” whose lead single made it to No. 1 on the Channel O African Edition Countdown in South Africa and several Awards including the Gbedu Awards in Lagos. “Follow Tradition” was released in 2013 as Seemo’s third studio Album with the hit song “New Nigeria”.
In 2014, Seemo took a break from music to go back to school. He graduated with a degree in Mass Communication from NTA College Jos, certified by Ahmadu Bello University. Seemo is now a certified media professional and Digital Creator.
In 2021, the CEO of Munataray Global Services, SEEMO collaborated with Doo-Doo Records an American label to release a new album, “Senior Man.” The album is a personal reflection of his journey from grass to grace. It is a story of hope and inspiration, and it is a testament to the power of hard work and determination.
“Senior Man” is a message to young people everywhere: no matter where you come from, you can achieve your dreams if you set your mind to it. It is also a reminder that we all have the power to make a difference in the world.
The album is made in Jos, but it is for the world. It is a bridge between the foundation of Nigerian Afro hip hop and the future of Afrobeats.
In 2022 SEEMO Da Black recorded another Album not yet released titled: “GHANA MUST GO NO GET RELIGION” which bothers around leadership, governance and the need for Africans to stand up and make the continent work devoid of religious, ethnic, or tribal jingoism.
