The Federal Government of Nigeria has paid tribute to Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian flag, following his recent passing. A delegation led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, visited Akinkunmi’s family to offer condolences on Monday.
Akinkunmi, a native of Ogun State, died a few days ago in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Idris noted the significance of Akinkunmi’s contribution to the country, emphasizing that there is no replacement for what he did in designing the Nigerian flag.
Akinkunmi designed the flag while studying abroad prior to Nigeria’s independence in 1960, and his creation remains a symbol of the nation.
Idris, while speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, noted that the efforts of the deceased are well appreciated.
He said: “We are here to console the family on behalf of Mr President. Pa Akinkunmi’s role cannot be forgotten. It is a symbol that we have yet to find a replacement for. He designed it when he was in his 20s, and he lived for more than 60 years after he designed it. Mr President received the news of his death. We want to identify with the family and the people of Oyo State.
“We came to tell them that the Federal Government identifies with them and the people of Oyo State and to say that the Nigerian government will stand by them.”
Remi Akinkunmi, who spoke on behalf of the family, thanked the delegation and expressed gratitude for the visitation.
