At least 15 people have been rescued, while several others remain trapped after a two-storey building collapsed at No. 54, Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, near UBA Bank in Oyingbo, Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, shortly after midnight.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), a distress call was received at 12:20 a.m., and firefighters from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station arrived at the scene within minutes, beginning search and rescue operations by 12:29 a.m.
Confirming the development, the Director of LSFRS, Margaret Adeseye, said 15 persons—including seven adult males, four adult females, and four children—had so far been rescued alive with varying degrees of injuries.
She stated that the victims had been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for urgent medical care.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the collapsed structure had been previously marked as distressed but was still occupied by residents at the time of the incident.
Adeseye noted that rescue operations were ongoing, with emergency responders continuing to search through the rubble for any victims who might still be trapped.
She assured the public that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in collaboration with other emergency agencies, remained fully mobilized at the site “to ensure that every trapped individual is safely recovered.”
