14-Year-Old Golfer Triumphs at Inaugural Golf Shop NG Tournament

A 14-year-old prodigy, Malik Adams, has stunned the local golfing community after emerging winner of the maiden Golf Shop NG Tournament, defeating more than 170 competitors at the Elephant Cement Golf Club.

Adams, a student of Technical College, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, delivered an outstanding performance, finishing six strokes ahead of his closest rival. Playing off a 25 handicap, he returned an impressive Net 61 (10-under par) and a Gross 86, marking one of the best rounds of the competition.

The young golfer displayed remarkable composure throughout his round, recording 16 pars and two birdies on holes four and eight, outperforming a field that included experienced amateur and club golfers.

The inaugural tournament, organised by Golf Shop NG Ltd, attracted over 180 registered participants and drew significant attention within the golfing community.

Dignitaries present at the ceremonial tee-off included Jagunmolu Akande Ọmügeniyi, Ogun State Commissioner for Housing; the Ẹbi of Òdügeà, Oba Lukman Adebambo Salami; retired Chief Justice of Kwara State, Adebayo Samsudeen Apelogun; as well as Lambo Akanbi. Others were Umar Bakare and Adedeji Esan.

Speaking at the event, Esan commended the organisers for elevating the club’s profile and creating a competitive platform that blends youth development with elite participation.

Tournament organiser Mr. Kuti described the event as a strategic effort to promote grassroots golf development in Nigeria, noting that it provides emerging talents like Adams the opportunity to compete with more seasoned players.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and support this tournament has received,” he said, adding that the initiative is already helping to create a platform for young golfers to showcase and refine their skills.

He also acknowledged the contributions of corporate partners and the Local Organising Committee in ensuring the success of the event.

Golf Shop NG Ltd noted that the tournament marks its first foray into organising competitive golf events, with plans to sustain the initiative as part of efforts to grow the sport across Ogun State and beyond.
