Zamko Market in Langtang North Local Government Area is set for a significant transformation following the launch of major development projects by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem. The initiative aims to make markets across the council area safer, cleaner, and better organized, beginning with the busy trading hub along the Mban–Zamko road.

The projects currently underway include the construction of a solar-powered borehole, perimeter fencing, and the completion of the market’s administrative block. According to the council chairman, these efforts are designed to boost commercial activities, enhance security, and improve revenue collection.

Solar-Powered Borehole to Improve Hygiene and Ease Trade

Work has advanced on the solar-powered borehole, expected to serve traders, butchers, and livestock dealers within the market and the adjoining Zongo Cattle Market. With Zamko handling over 1,000 cattle weekly, the water project is anticipated to improve hygiene standards, reduce operational costs, and ease trading for market users.

Leaders of the Cattle Association expressed appreciation to Hon. Tyem, describing the intervention as timely and long overdue. They noted that access to clean and steady water will enhance livestock management and support the council’s revenue drive.

Perimeter Fencing to Strengthen Security and Revenue Control

The perimeter fencing project is also progressing, aimed at securing traders’ goods and regulating movement within the market. Market officials say the controlled entry points will assist security and revenue personnel in checking unauthorized access, preventing theft, and ensuring transparent revenue collection from goods and livestock entering or leaving the market.

Administrative Block Nearing Completion

Hon. Tyem disclosed that the market’s administrative block, currently at 35 percent completion, will soon be finalized to serve as the central coordination office for market management and revenue officers. Additional plans include establishing a police outpost for round-the-clock security, constructing modern toilets to improve sanitation, and properly demarcating the cattle market for more effective livestock management.

“Our focus is to make Zamko Market a model of orderliness, hygiene, and transparency — a market where traders can thrive and revenue can be properly accounted for,” the chairman stated.

Broader Impact on Local Economy

The Zamko Market upgrade forms part of the chairman’s broader strategy to modernize commercial spaces across Langtang North, stimulate local enterprise, and create a conducive environment for traders.

Upon completion, the solar borehole, fencing, and administrative structures are expected to ease business operations, attract more livestock traders, and significantly enhance internally generated revenue for the council.
