The Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nura Abdullahi, has regained his freedom after spending 61 days in captivity.
Abdullahi was abducted on July 25, 2026, when armed bandits reportedly attacked his residence in Bungudu town.
According to the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Abdullahi and four other captives escaped from their abductors during an intelligence-led military operation targeting suspected terrorist hideouts in the area.
The five victims were subsequently received and secured by troops.
A statement by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lt.-Col. Aliyu Danja, said the operation created an opportunity for the captives to break free from the terrorists’ hideout.
The development brings to an end more than two months of captivity for the Bungudu council chairman, whose abduction had raised concerns among residents and authorities in the state.
Following his release, Abdullahi was taken to Gusau for medical attention. Reports said he and the other rescued victims were receiving care after their ordeal in captivity.
The circumstances surrounding the operation and the condition of the other rescued victims were not immediately disclosed in detail.
The release comes amid continuing security operations by Nigerian troops in parts of the North-West, particularly Zamfara State, where armed groups have carried out attacks and abductions in several communities.
The military said operations would continue to target terrorist and bandit enclaves and deny them freedom of movement across the region.
