Nigerian workers have renewed calls for an increase in the national minimum wage to N500,000, citing the rising cost of living and growing economic pressure on households.
The demand comes as the Federal Government begins consultations ahead of fresh negotiations on workers’ wages.
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Kamil Shoretire, disclosed on Tuesday that background discussions on wages and workers’ welfare were already underway, although no date has been announced for formal negotiations.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), Trade Union Side, has called for the immediate constitution of a committee to negotiate a new minimum wage ahead of January 2027.
The workers proposed N500,000 as the minimum monthly salary for Grade Level 01, Step 1, under a proposed 2027 salary structure. They also called for an immediate wage award and upward review of salaries and allowances.
Labour has also demanded a reduction in the price of petrol to N500 per litre, arguing that rising fuel costs have further worsened the financial burden on workers.
Nigeria’s current national minimum wage of N70,000 was approved in 2024 following negotiations between the government, organised labour and employers.
The Federal Government said consultations were also ongoing with workers in sectors including health and education, with the aim of resolving outstanding wage and allowance issues in time for agreed provisions to be reflected in the 2027 budget.
