The family of a student involved in a bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre has issued a formal apology to the victim and his family after a video of the assault circulated widely online.
The footage showed a group of male students attacking another student lying on the ground, with the victim being beaten and kicked while another student recorded the incident. The video quickly drew public attention and outrage.
In response, the school’s management announced that the students involved had been expelled.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by Tim Asoro, the parents said they were shocked and deeply embarrassed by their child’s actions. They admitted that the behaviour displayed in the video was unacceptable and expressed regret for the pain and fear caused to the victim.
“We apologise to the victim and his family. No child should face such treatment,” the statement read.
The parents confirmed that the victim did not suffer physical injury but acknowledged the emotional distress the incident may have caused. They said their son has expressed regret and understands the impact of his actions on the victim, the school, and their family.
The Asoro family stated they were not defending the behaviour and emphasized that counselling and guidance are being provided to help their son take responsibility and develop better conduct in the future. They also expressed respect for the disciplinary measures taken by the school.
The Edo State Police Command has asked the school to present the students involved so that investigations can begin. Authorities noted that those responsible could face legal action depending on the findings.
The incident has reignited discussions about bullying in Nigerian secondary schools. A similar case in 2024 involved a female student, Namtira Bwala, at Lead British International School in Gwarinpa, Abuja, sparking national outrage.
