South Africa captain and goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, has called on football fans across Africa and the world to remain united and avoid allowing political tensions to overshadow the spirit of the game.
The appeal comes amid a wave of online reactions following South Africa’s difficult start at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, where they suffered a 2–0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match and ended the game with nine men after two players were sent off.
The result quickly sparked heated discussions on social media, with fans from several African countries reacting strongly, including some who used the moment to criticize South Africa. The online exchanges were further influenced by lingering frustrations over past xenophobic attacks in South Africa that have affected migrants from countries such as Nigeria and Ghana.
Ahead of South Africa’s next group fixture against Czechia, Williams urged supporters to put aside divisions and focus on unity, respect, and the shared passion for football.
He emphasized that Africans should see themselves as one people and avoid letting off-field issues spill into sporting rivalries, calling instead for mutual support and celebration of the game.
