Victims Support: Reps Dafa’an and Asama delivers Speaker Tajudeen’s N20 million to Bassa, Plateau state
As part of ongoing efforts to support victims of violent attacks across Plateau State, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has donated the sum of N20 million to affected communities in Bassa Local Government Area.
The donation was formally presented at the palace of the Bra Ngwe Irigwe, Rt. Rev. Ronku Aka, the paramount ruler of Irigwe nation, by Hon. John Dafa’an, who represents Shendam, Mikang, and Qua’an-Pan Federal Constituency. He was accompanied by Hon. Daniel Asama, the Member representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency.
The financial support is part of a broader N100 million intervention by the House of Representatives, which includes an earlier N50 million presented to the Plateau State Government and an additional N50 million earmarked for direct disbursement to severely affected LGAs—Bokkos (N20 million), Bassa (N20 million), and Riyom (N10 million). The team had previously visited Riyom for a similar donation.
Speaking during the presentation, Hon. Dafan emphasized the Speaker’s concern for communities affected by insecurity, stating, “This gesture reflects the Speaker’s compassion and commitment to supporting Nigerians in distress. We’re also here to engage with local leaders toward lasting peace.”
Dr. D.M. Gya, President of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), received the donation on behalf of the community. He expressed gratitude to the Speaker, the Plateau Caucus in the National Assembly, and local representatives for responding to the plight of the people.
“This gesture is symbolic. It shows our cry has been heard at the National Assembly. We appreciate this unity, which goes beyond party lines, and we pray for peace so that we can focus again on development,” Dr. Gya stated.
Hon. Daniel Asama, who represents Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, decried the continued loss of lives in his constituency, describing his repeated visits as heartbreaking. He urged for sustained military action and federal attention to end the bloodshed.
“We want a Nigeria where we are not constantly mourning. I am doing everything I can as your representative to be your voice in Abuja,” Asama said, acknowledging the Speaker’s support and calling for continued collaboration to improve security.
The paramount ruler of Irigwe nation, Rt. Rev. Ronku Aka, assured that the funds will be equitably distributed to victims and used transparently. He commended the lawmakers for prioritizing the welfare of the people, urging them to keep advocating for peace and justice.
Present at the event were, Hon Yakubu Dati, Chairman of the Governing Council, Federal Polytechnic; traditional leaders, representatives from Bassa Local Government Council, and other dignitaries.
